This Maple Apple Pie is an apple pie with cheddar cheese baked into it. It’s the best!
Maple Apple Pie with Cheddar Cheese:
Maple and apple are a classic pairing, such as in my maple apple tartlets recipe. And what’s even more classic is the addition of cheddar cheese to apple pie. My husband grew up in New England eating slices of cheddar cheese melted on top of slices of apple pie, which he thought was a little strange. But in this recipe, the cheddar cheese is mixed into the filling, so it’s baked right in there. It’s a salty, savory taste combined with the sweetness of the apple filling. It’s fabulous!
🛒Ingredients needed:
- pie crusts
- granulated white sugar
- all purpose flour
- ground cinnamon
- salt

✏️How to make Maple Apple Pie:
*The complete, printable recipe with all ingredients and instructions is at the end of this post.
-
Preheat the oven to 375 ℉. Line a 9-inch pie plate with one pie crust; set aside.
-
In a large bowl, stir together the sugar, flour, cinnamon and salt. Add the apples, and toss gently to coat. Add the cheese and ¼ cup of maple syrup; toss gently to combine. Transfer the filling the the pie crust-lined plate. Drizzle the cream on top. Trim the bottom pastry to the edge of the pie plate.
-
Cut slits in the remaining pie crust. Place on top of the filling and seal. Crimp the edges.
-
Cover the edge of the pie with foil or a pie crust shield (to prevent over-browning). Bake the pie for 40 minutes. Remove the foil or shield. Bake for about 20 minutes more (or until the apples are tender and the pastry is golden brown).
Transfer the baked pie to a wire rack. Brush the top of the pie with the remaining 2 tablespoons of maple syrup. Cool for at least one hour.
➡️Recipe Tips and Substitutions:
- Use store-bought crusts to make this recipe easiest. Or make my favorite recipe for pie crust.
- This recipe calls for using white cheddar cheese. This ensures that you’re not seeing weird orange spots inside your apple pie. For the best flavor, choose a “sharp” white cheddar cheese.
- We like to use Granny Smith apples for apple pie. Alternately, you can use Honeycrisp, Golden Delicious, Rome, Jonagold or Braeburn apples.
- Pure maple syrup in this recipe will taste 100% better than pancake syrup.
✔️What to serve with Apple Pie:
Traditionally, apple pie is served warm topped with vanilla ice cream. That’s what I suggest serving with this maple apple pie. You can also top with apple pie ice cream, maple ice cream or salted caramel ice cream.
★How to Store:
Since this maple apple pie is made with dairy (cheddar cheese and cream), it’s best to keep it stored in the refrigerator. Cover it tightly with plastic wrap, or place it in an airtight pie keeper and refrigerate for up to four days. You can also freeze a fully cooked apple pie. Just place it uncovered in the freezer. Once frozen solid, wrap the pie in plastic wrap and place it back into the freezer. Any apple pie leftovers can be frozen this way too. You can keep it frozen for 3 to 4 months.
❤️Why I love this recipe:
- It’s delicious. I love the combination of the cheese with the apple. It’s very different in flavor than classic apple pie.
- Apple pie is an easy and affordable homemade pie to bake!
- Warm and gooey apple pie topped with melting vanilla ice cream is just about the best dessert you can make.
