Now there is finally a burger for the adult crowd: Hamburgers with Cabernet and Sautéed Onions

This is the perfect burger recipe for wine lovers!  This hamburger recipe has cabernet sauvignon added in to give it rich flavor. If you don’t drink wine or cook with wine, then you might like to try one of my other burger recipes. The sautéed onions added to these burgers are a flavor bonus too.

ingredients displayed for making hamburgers

Ingredients needed:

  • onions
  • butter
  • ground beef
  • ground sirloin
  • cabernet sauvignon (okay to use Syrah or Zinfandel- whatever you have on hand)
  • celery salt
  • dry mustard
  • salt and pepper
  • garlic powder
  • thyme
  • hamburger buns
  • desired hamburger fixings!

A note about the ground meat:

It’s perfectly okay to use 3 pounds of ground beef instead of half ground beef and half ground sirloin. Adding the sirloin just gives the burgers a richer flavor, but all ground beef is just fine too.

How to make Hamburgers with Cabernet and Sautéed Onions:

Sauté the onions first. In a large skillet, melt butter and add chopped onions. Sauté until browned. This will take about 12 minutes. If you want the onions to be more caramelized, you can cook them 25 to 30 minutes.

Add the sautéed onions to a bowl along with the rest of the ingredients.

hamburger patties before cooking

Form the meat into  8 hamburger patties. Add to a hot grill, and cook until they reach your desired level of doneness.

How to toast hamburger buns:

Warm hamburger buns at 350 for about 5 minutes to get them slightly warmed and a little bit crispy. Alternately, you can butter the buns, put them on a baking sheet and broil them until crisp. I prefer to make them this way because buttered buns are so delicious!

Add your favorite fixings to these Hamburgers with Cabernet and Sautéed Onions. Lettuce, tomato and burger sauce are just perfect. Or go old school with mayo and ketchup. If you like to add cheese, I suggest Monterey Jack, Provolone or Swiss. Add the cheese while the burgers are still on the grill so it gets nice and melted.

My advice would be to drink the rest of the wine that you’re not using for the burgers. But if you need more ideas on how to use it up, check out my post on 100 Recipes Using Leftover Red Wine!

Try these burgers for a backyard barbecue this summer. If it’s a smaller gathering, it’s okay to cut the recipe in half to make just 4 burgers instead of 8. Enjoy!
