My little boy turns 11 today! It’s totally crazy. He was just a baby… like yesterday! The scariest part about having an 11 year old is to think that in 7 years this kid will be leaving me to go off to college. I have just 7 years to make sure he’s molded into the best person possible to face the big, wide world on his own and make a life for himself. Whoa.
In a related story, it was career week last week in my son’s 5th grade class. I was invited to speak about my profession as a food writer and recipe developer, so I brought the kids some cupcakes with Cookies and Cream Frosting. I used these cupcake recipes. And the frosting is packed with Oreo crumbles.
The 5th graders were pretty interested in what I had to say. I told them about how I spend my days… developing recipes, testing them, sampling them, taking pictures of them, writing about them, and being quite active on the computer. I told them about how I got started and how hard I’ve worked to create what I have. I told them about the fun food-related opportunities that occasionally come my way- trips to New York City, Louisiana, Mexico, Napa Valley and Italy. And I told them about my cookbook too. I left that classroom feeling all high and mighty and thinking that I had just about the coolest job in the world.
And then my son came home from school. He told me about the fighter pilot. And the engineer who worked for Disney designing the amusement park rides. And then there was the Dad who shared a YouTube video of himself almost getting killed by a deranged elephant. I guess my job isn’t all that exciting after all.
But my son disagreed. He insisted that I was second favorite only to the fighter pilot. What a sweetie. I read through 36 thank you notes and discovered that many of the kids were excited about trying to start their own blogs and using their cameras to start taking pictures of food. They told me that they loved my photography and that everything on my site looked delicious. A few of them were inspired to ask their parents if they could help out more in the kitchen. And they told me that they loved my cupcakes too 🙂
Happy birthday to my dear boy Brooks. May your 11th year be as fabulous as your first 10! If you’d like to wish RecipeBoy a Happy Birthday, head on over to his food blog and visit his birthday post. He’s loving the attention!

Cookies and Cream Frosting

- 12 to 15 additional OREOS, for garnish (optional)

- Add the vanilla and cream and continue to beat on medium speed for 1 minute more, adding more cream if needed for desired spreading/piping consistency. Add the cookie crumbles and mix just until combined.
- Scoop into a piping bag with a wide tip and pipe decoratively onto cupcakes, or spread onto cupcakes as desired. Garnish with a whole Oreo cookie (if using).

Just made it myself right now! Absolutely perfect frosting- love the taste! My frosting came out darker than expected, it became more of a greyish colour, but nevertheless it was delicious 🙂 Thanks so much for the recipe!
Bit late, but hope your son had a great birthday 😉
Great frosting! Everyone loved it. Have to make frosting from scratch due to food allergies and this perfect. Trying to come up with an excuse to make a cake to use this again.
What is whipping cream?? Like cool whip
It’s “cream.” You’ll find it near the buttermilk- labeled as whipping cream (in a carton). It’s definitely not Cool Whip!
Just made this frosting. It’s delicious, but I must have over-crumbled my oreos. My frosting is almost gray! I used 12 cookies and just mixed the crumbles in. Hmmm, wonder where I went wrong? Awww well…the cupcakes are de-lish regardless!! 🙂
Cookies and cream is one of my favorite flavors!
Aww..Happy Birthday to your 11 year old Brooks! You do have the coolest job! The age progression party photos made me a bit teary eyed..my grandson turned 11 this year too. The cupcakes look like a hit. :o)
Aww.. What a sweet post, Lori! Wish recipeboy a very happy birthday! 🙂 I wish someone made cookies and cream frosting for my 11th birthday. He’s a lucky boy! 🙂
11?? How exciting and how fast! I have been following your blog for so long that I can’t believe he is 11!
P.S. What a great way to celebrate a bday! Cookies and Cream frosting?? Sign me up!
Could this be any more perfect?? It’s absolutely gorgeous!!
I made a very similar Oreo buttercream a few months back for a toddler’s birthday cake… FYI, the “mottled” appearance makes for PERFECT sock monkey fur icing!! And it’s delicious, to boot!
