My little boy turns 11 today! It’s totally crazy. He was just a baby… like yesterday! The scariest part about having an 11 year old is to think that in 7 years this kid will be leaving me to go off to college. I have just 7 years to make sure he’s molded into the best person possible to face the big, wide world on his own and make a life for himself. Whoa.
In a related story, it was career week last week in my son’s 5th grade class. I was invited to speak about my profession as a food writer and recipe developer, so I brought the kids some cupcakes with Cookies and Cream Frosting. I used these cupcake recipes. And the frosting is packed with Oreo crumbles.
The 5th graders were pretty interested in what I had to say. I told them about how I spend my days… developing recipes, testing them, sampling them, taking pictures of them, writing about them, and being quite active on the computer. I told them about how I got started and how hard I’ve worked to create what I have. I told them about the fun food-related opportunities that occasionally come my way- trips to New York City, Louisiana, Mexico, Napa Valley and Italy. And I told them about my cookbook too. I left that classroom feeling all high and mighty and thinking that I had just about the coolest job in the world.
And then my son came home from school. He told me about the fighter pilot. And the engineer who worked for Disney designing the amusement park rides. And then there was the Dad who shared a YouTube video of himself almost getting killed by a deranged elephant. I guess my job isn’t all that exciting after all.
But my son disagreed. He insisted that I was second favorite only to the fighter pilot. What a sweetie. I read through 36 thank you notes and discovered that many of the kids were excited about trying to start their own blogs and using their cameras to start taking pictures of food. They told me that they loved my photography and that everything on my site looked delicious. A few of them were inspired to ask their parents if they could help out more in the kitchen. And they told me that they loved my cupcakes too 🙂
Happy birthday to my dear boy Brooks. May your 11th year be as fabulous as your first 10! If you’d like to wish RecipeBoy a Happy Birthday, head on over to his food blog and visit his birthday post. He’s loving the attention!

Talk to me about delicious. Crazy good. Happy birthday to your baby!
I think both your frostings look delish! Your son has done a
remarkable job on his website. I had already wished him a
Happy Birthday on his website.
Thank you!
I have to laugh at your post! You think your son will be leaving your house in 7 years? ha ha My teen is 20 and she chose a local college, so she’s staying at home. She wants to move out but seems to spend all her money on clothes, food and Starbucks! I don’t think she’ll ever leave!
Your cookies and cream frosting looks wonderful!! Happy Birthday to your son!!
That’s not too shabby to come in second to a figher pilot. I mean….it was a fighter pilot, which probably makes everyone think of Jedis. Or is that just me? Anyway, happy birthday to your son! I want to eat the cookies and cream recipe out of the bowl.
That’s a great story! It’s really cool the kids checked your site and commented on the pictures. Plot is cool, but developing recipes yields tangible results daily! I like the vanilla Oreo cupcake, never tried that!
This is the perfect birthday frosting 🙂 I love the golden Oreo version…yum!
That is so sweet! And Happy Bday Recipe Boy!!
Those cupcakes look like a perfect way to celebrate an 11th birthday! It has to be so fabulous to hear that the kids are more encouraged to get in the kitchen with their parents after hearing you talk about what you do!
Getting kids involved in the kitchen is definitely KEY to getting this country into a healthier place..so you did good! I’m sort of in love with this frosting. Oreos are the one storebought cookie I can NEVER turn down!
Lori, I’ve been searching for the perfect cookies n cream frosting! I love the golden oreo version. 🙂
Happy Birthday to Recipe Boy!!
