I love these Amish Sugar Cookies so much! They’re a great little crispy sugar cookie.
I’ve been told by others that these are the best sugar cookies they’ve ever had. They’re soft, lightly crisp, buttery and delicious. I’d describe them as kind of “melt in your mouth” type cookies. They’re the sort of cookie that is excellent dipped in milk. And it will difficult to eat just a couple.
The Amish are known for their baked goods, and somewhere along the way I was given this recipe. Since everyone goes nuts for my Amish Pumpkin Cinnamon Rolls, I had to give these Amish sugar cookies a try too. And now they’re my favorite!
Ingredients needed:
- white sugar
- powdered sugar
- salted butter
- canola or vegetable oil
- eggs
- vanilla extract
- all purpose flour
- baking powder, baking soda and salt
- cream of tartar
How to make Amish Sugar Cookies:
The complete, printable recipe is at the end of this post.
- In a large bowl, use an electric mixer to combine the sugars, butter and oil. Beat well. Add the eggs and vanilla and beat again.
- In separate bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, cream of tartar and salt. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet. Mix until well blended.
- Cover the bowl with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 4 hours, or overnight.
- When ready to bake, preheat the oven to 375 degrees F. Form the dough into small balls, roll in granulated sugar, and flatten slightly with a fork.
Bake for 10 to 12 minutes. They’ll be crisp, and they’ll be a little bit golden brown on the bottom.
If you like shortbread, then you’ll most definitely like these cookies too. They’re not exactly like shortbread, but they are similar in that they are light and flaky and buttery. You must try baking these Amish sugar cookies. Enjoy!
This recipe makes 48 small-ish cookies. They freeze well, so if that’s too many cookies for you to have around then it’s okay to store some in the freezer. Just keep them in a well-sealed container or freezer zip baggie, and take some out when the craving hits.

These. Cookies are the best. I made these last weekend and could not stop eating them. I added an additional teaspoon of vanilla and approximately 3/4 teaspoon almond extract. They are fantastic. I just flattened some with my hand, I didn’t use a fork to make a crisscross pattern and I used coarse sugar to roll them in. I froze half the batch, it makes a lot. Thanks for a great cookie.
I made this recipe with Better Batter gluten free flour (weighed, not measured) and they turned out beautifully. Huge hit at Christmas dinner!
This recipe came out exactly as described. Perfect crisp little cookies that melt in your mouth!
