A Whiskey Sour is a great whiskey cocktail recipe with citrus and and sweetener added.
Whiskey Sour
The first mention of a Whiskey Sour cocktail was in a Wisconsin newspaper way back in 1870. It’s referred to as “sour” because of the citrus added to the cocktail. Sometimes there is a dash of egg white added in, but this recipe does not include an egg white. The Millionaire’s Lemonade cocktail is another recipe that you might enjoy if you are a whiskey lover!

➡️ Recipe Tips and Substitutions:
- Use either bourbon or whiskey for this recipe.
- Take the time to freshly squeeze the lemon and lime juice for this cocktail instead of using store-bought juices.
- You can certainly use simple syrup (or another kind of sweetener such as honey) for this recipe.
- We love to use the Luxardo brand gourmet cherries, but maraschino cherries may be used too.
★ What’s the difference between Bourbon and Whiskey?
From Dictionary.com: Whiskey is a general term for an alcoholic liquor made from fermented mashed grains. Bourbon is the term for a whiskey made from a grain mixture that is at least 51% corn. Bourbon was traditionally made in Bourbon County, Kentucky, and most bourbon is still produced in the state of Kentucky.
❤️ Why I love this recipe:
- I love a good Old Fashioned, but I love the sweet and sour aspect of this whiskey cocktail.
- The Whiskey Sour is a popular drink to order at a bar that is easy to make at home.
- The flavors of this cocktail balance out the bite of bourbon.
