This is a super simple, 4-ingredient recipe for Easy Apple Tarte Tatin, a traditional French dessert made with fresh apples.
The Tarte Tatin is a classic French dessert. It was named after the Tatin sisters, who invented it and served it in their hotel as its signature dish. It’s a pastry in which the fruit (usually apples) is caramelized in butter and sugar before the tart is baked. It originated in France but has spread to other countries over the years. How to make Easy Apple Tarte Tatin:
The complete, printable recipe is at the end of this post.
-
Preheat the oven to 375℉.
-
Use a 9-inch cake pan as a template, and cut a 9-inch circle from the puff pastry. Poke it all over with a fork.
-
In a large saucepan over medium-heat, combine the butter and sugar. Cook about 5 minutes, until light brown in color (stirring constantly). Add the apples, stirring until they are coated in a thick layer of caramel. Cook for about 15 to 20 minutes, turning the apples constantly so that they bathe in the caramel. Remove from the heat when the caramel has reduced and little remains in the bottom of the pan.
-
Position the apple slices in concentric circles on the bottom of the cake pan. Press the apples tightly against each other, then pour the remaining caramel over the top.
-
Lay the circle of puff pastry on top. Tuck the puff pastry down the sides of the pan.
-
Bake for 45 to 50 minutes, until golden brown.
Look at how gorgeous and caramelized that is!
If you go to France, you can order this is a café or restaurant. I’m not sure if the French make it as simply as this one is made, but you can certainly make this at home with success. It’s not a complicated recipe, even though it looks like it came from a bakery!
It’s served simply in slices (like a pie). But it’s even more amazing when served warm and topped with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. Plus, if you happen to have a bounty of apples, this is a great way to use them up. Enjoy!
