This recipe for Sweet and Spicy Baked Beans is the most perfect recipe for baked beans that I’ve ever put together.
Sweet and Spicy Baked Beans
These Sweet and Spicy Baked Beans are a MUST have for summer celebrations. Think the 4th of July or a Memorial day BBQ. What about a big family reunion? Almost everyone loves baked beans and with the combination of sweet and spicy flavors in these I can guaranteed they’ll be gobbled up before you know it. I always end up making them multiple times throughout the summer months!
🛒Ingredients needed:
- bacon
- onion
- green bell pepper
- brown sugar

✏️How to make Sweet and Spicy Baked Beans:
*The complete, printable recipe with all ingredients and instructions is at the end of this post.
-
Preheat the oven to 350℉. Spray a 9×13-inch pan (or similar casserole dish) with nonstick spray.
-
Cook the bacon in a large nonstick skillet over medium-high heat until crisp. Remove the bacon from the pan and set on a paper towel to drain. Remove all fat from the pan except for about 1 tablespoon of the bacon fat. Sauté the onions and bell pepper in the bacon fat until softened, 6 to 8 minutes.
-
In a large bowl, combine the onion/pepper, bacon, beans, brown sugar, Dijon, beans and barbecue sauce.
-
Bake, uncovered, for 45 minutes. Serve immediately, or keep covered until ready to serve.
➡️Recipe Tips:
- Make these as spicy as you want. One tablespoon of Dijon will give it a little kick, and two tablespoons will give it more. It also depends on the spice-factor of the barbecue sauce you choose to use.
- If you are preparing this recipe as GLUTEN-FREE, just be sure to use brands of bacon, Dijon, beans and barbecue sauce that are known to be GF.
- If you’re taking these along to a BBQ or a party, bake them at home, cover tightly and serve at romm temperature. They’ll be every bit as good!
✔️What to serve with Sweet and Spicy Baked Beans:
- The most obvious choice is burgers, the ideal, easy barbecue food!
- If making these beans as part of a summer barbecue think of adding a great potato salad or macaroni salad to your menu.
- What’s a better ending for a summer meal than some delicious homemade Fresh Peach Ice Cream?
★How to Store:
This recipe makes quite a lot, so if you’re not serving it at a gathering, you may have some leftovers. It’s best to store them in a tightly sealed container for 3 to 4 days. They’re great reheated, so think about planning another meal around them. Maybe ribs?
❤️Why I love this recipe:
- The recipe serves a small crowd (about 10 servings), so it’s perfect for serving for a summer barbecue. It’s always in my rotation!
- I love that these are so easy to make. Yes, they’re “homemade,” but the process is sped up by starting with canned beans instead of hours and hours using dried beans.
- That combination of spicy from the mustard and sweet from the brown sugar is always a winning combination for me. Add in the bacon and BBQ sauce and I’m in heaven!

Yum! Bring on the bacon! I mean really though. There’s hardly a point to baked beans without it. Love that this feeds a crowd!
