Tropical Margaritas are refreshing frozen cocktails.
If you’re a lover of margaritas, this is definitely one to try. And if you love a good fruit smoothie recipe, then you’ll probably like these as well! Tropical margaritas are like the best fruit smoothies with tequila added in and turned into margaritas. And there’s a tropical twist to them too.
Make these for Cinco de Mayo or to celebrate the end of the week or for Happy Hour with friends! Everyone loves a good, fruity, frozen cocktail.
How to make Tropical Margaritas:
You’ll need a good blender- one that can truly blend the ice into a slushie texture. There’s nothing worse than having big chunks of ice swimming around in your frozen margarita! You want all of that ice crushed down blended nicely. The Vitamix is the most amazing blender for making smoothies and cocktails. The Waring brand is a cheaper alternative that works pretty well too.
You’ll need tequila and triple sec for your alcohol in these margaritas. Those are combined with sweet and sour mix (or margarita mix), fresh lime juice, mango, pineapple and kiwi. Those are all blended together to create tropical margaritas.
Margarita glasses:
I love the blown glass, Mexican style glasses like these >> set of 4 Handblown Margarita Glasses. Or you can opt for a more basic set of four margarita glasses. If you are having a larger party, I suggest going to Costco, liquor store or party store to see if you can buy a set of 24 glasses. Plastic margarita glasses are an option too.
Substitution suggestions:
There is an option in the recipe to use either margarita mix or sweet and sour mix. It’s really your preference. If you want a little bit of coconut flavor added in, you can make ice cubes out of coconut water, or you can add in about 1/4 cup coconut milk or coconut cream. Leave out the kiwi if you’d like. Kiwis are not technically a tropical fruit as much as pineapple and mango. But they are a nice addition to these tropical margaritas, and I like the black dots they add to the drink!
How to edge the rims of a margarita glass:
Margaritas are usually edged with margarita salt. Some people don’t like a salt rim, so you can certainly leave it plain if you’d like. To salt the rim, dip the margarita glass in a plate filled with fresh lime or orange juice, and then dip into the margarita salt. You’ll pour the drink into the glass after you’ve salted the rim. If you’d like a sweet rim, you can dip the glass in superfine sugar instead. Superfine sugar can be found in your market’s baking aisle. Or you can give regular sugar a whir in your blender to turn it into superfine sugar.

Tropical Margaritas
Ingredients
- 4½ ounces tequila
- 2 ounces triple sec
- 2 ounces margarita mix or sweet and sour mix
- 1 ounce freshly squeezed lime juice
- 2 ripe mangoes, peeled and chopped
- 1/2 cup frozen pineapple chunks
- 1 whole kiwi, peeled and chopped
- 3 cups ice
- lime wedges, for garnish
- superfine sugar
Instructions
- Combine all ingredients (except lime and sugar) in a blender and process until smooth.
- Place sugar in low, flat bowl. Run lime wedge around rims of margarita glasses and dip rims lightly in sugar. Alternately, you can dip in salt for a more traditional margarita.
- Pour drinks into margarita glasses and serve.
Notes
- *If you wish to make a non-alcoholic version (for yourself... or for the children), just leave out the tequila and triple sec and pour in a little orange juice instead. It's still delicious!
