These Portuguese Roasted Potatoes are so much more than regular roasted potatoes!

What makes them different?  Well, they’re potatoes that are kicked up a notch by adding in smoked sausage, veggies and spices. You can eat these Portuguese Roasted Potatoes as a main dish, or serve them as a side to chicken, beef or roasted pork.

How to make Portuguese Roasted Potatoes:

First you’ll pour water into a roasting pan (or you can use a sheet pan). Then you’ll stir in red wine vinegar, paprika and sugar. Chopped baking potatoes, sliced sausage, sweet onions, tomatoes, fresh parsley and salt/pepper are added to the water.  All is tossed, and then it’s roasted for just under two hours.

The long baking time gives the water a chance to evaporate- leaving the added flavor behind, and it results in crisp and wonderful potatoes.

What is Portuguese sausage, and where can you find it?

Look for Portuguese sausage (also known as Linguiça) at Whole Foods (that’s where I’ve had luck finding it). Linguiça is a mild sausage. Chourico (chorizo) is its spicy twin made different only by the addition of hot peppers. But if you can always used regular smoked sausage if you can’t locate the Linguiça or the Chourico.

I’ve served these Portuguese Roasted Potatoes before at a Portuguese themed dinner party that I hosted.  They were a bit hit. Everyone loved them! And they were the perfect accompaniment to pork stew.

Consider making something different for dinner, and try making these Portuguese Roasted Potatoes. I think you’ll be pleased with the flavor and texture. They’re definitely different than plain roasted potatoes. They’re better. Enjoy!

I am currently on my third time making this recipe. Hubby and picky tween approved. I am being completely truthful when I say the pan does not last 24 hours in my house between the three of us, really great recipe and easy to follow!

This is such a good dinner starting with the basic recipe that can be tweaked depending on what you have in the house. Chourico is even better then linguicia in my opinion.but don’t use chorizo. If you like really spicy then get the hot chourico. So yummy. Canned whole plum tomatoes can replace the fresh if they aren’t in season. Just squeeze them with your hands and place in baking dish, replace water total with the juice in the can. Don’t. waste it. A mixture of sweet and white potatoes or just sweet is a delicious balance to the spicy! Top with cilantro after cooking if available fresh where you live.

I loved this recipe so much! Bought the sausage by mistake at Central Market withouth knowing it was Portuguese, therefore looked for a recipe for it, and I’m glad I found this one, which I’m sure I will repeat on the near future. For me the oven time was only 1 hr, I left them longer and they are falling apart. Used spanish smoked paprika which gave them an amazing spicy flavor. The sausage was made with pork and lamb. It is amazingly good.

This was good, I must not have had enough potatoes because it came out soupy, but still good. I used a can of diced fire roasted tomatoes instead of fresh. We’ll give it another try though.

The Portuguese smoked sausage is called Linguica. It can be ordered online at http://www.gasparssausage.com
My family is Portuguese and we us Linguica in many recipes. It can be found in links, patties even ground up.

This is such a simple but tasty recipe. I don’t actually eat meat, so I made 2 pans, one with meat and one with out. both were very enjoyable, unfortunately mine did not look as nice, so I didn’t photograph it, but hopefully next time

This was a fantastic, very flavorful dish that we had at a recent party for an upcoming Portugal trip. The smoked paprika and sausage made a wonderful tasting casserole.
