These Greek Butter Cookies are a buttery, almond-flavored shortbread-type cookie recipe.
Greek Butter Cookies are a delightful, traditional, sweet ending to a Greek Dinner Party. You’ll find these cookies if you visit Greece, but it’s much easier to bake your own at home!
Ingredients needed:
- salted butter
- white sugar
- egg
- vanilla extract
- almond extract
- all purpose flour
- powdered sugar
- chocolate and nuts (optional)
How to make Greek Butter Cookies:
The full, printable recipe is at the end of this post. Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F. Line baking sheets with parchment paper.
Use a mixer to combine the butter, sugar and egg. Then mix in the almond and vanilla extracts. Flour is mixed in next. The dough will be thick, so you may need to knead it a bit with (clean) hands to get the dough to come together.
Spoon out tablespoonfuls of dough and roll them into 4-inch logs. Curl them to make a crescent shape. Place them on the baking sheets, and then bake for 10 minutes, or until browned and firm.
Let your Greek Butter Cookies cool completely. Then roll them in powdered sugar. Alternately, you can dip them in melted chocolate and edge them in nuts.

Greek Butter Cookies
Ingredients
- 1 cup (2 sticks) salted butter, at room temperature
- ¾ cup granulated white sugar
- 1 large egg
- ½ teaspoon vanilla extract
- ½ teaspoon almond extract
- 2¼ cups all-purpose flour
- ½ cup powdered sugar (for rolling)
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 400°F. Line baking sheets with parchment paper or silpat mats.
- In a medium bowl, use an electric mixer to beat together the butter, sugar and egg until smooth. Mix in the vanilla and almond extracts. Blend in the flour to form a dough. You may have to knead by hand at the end as the dough will be crumbly before it takes shape as a ball of dough.
- Take about a tablespoon of dough at a time and roll into 4-inch logs, then curl them slightly to make a crescent shape. Place cookies 1 to 2 inches apart onto the prepared cookie sheets.
- Bake for 10 minutes in the preheated oven, or until lightly browned and firm. Allow cookies to cool completely before dusting with confectioners' sugar (or dip in chocolate per the instructions in the notes below).
Notes
- Try dipping some in chocolate (½ cup melted chocolate chips) and edging them in ½ cup finely chopped walnuts.
