Baked BBQ Onion Rings have barbecue sauce baked right into them! They’re coated with crispy panko bread crumbs too.
I was recently looking for a recipe that would go nicely with my Chicken Salad Sandwiches. I love a good side to a sandwich, whether it’s fries, cole slaw or potato chips. Something needs to sit on that plate besides the sandwich! Onion rings are my absolute favorite. I’ve made them before, but I was hoping to come up with something a little different. After much day-dreaming, baked bbq onion rings is what I decided on.
🛒 Ingredients Needed:
- barbecue sauce
- eggs
- all purpose flour
- panko breadcrumbs
- sweet onions
- cooking spray
✏️ How to make Baked BBQ Onion Rings:
-
Preheat the oven to 450 degrees F. Place two baking sheets in the oven and let those preheat too.
-
In a medium bowl, whisk together the barbecue sauce, eggs and flour. Place the bread crumbs in a separate bowl.
-
Using tongs (or your fingers) dip an onion slice in the barbecue sauce mixture, shake the excess off and then dunk on all sides into the bread crumbs. Lay on a cool baking sheet. Repeat until all onion slices have been dunked.
❤️What I Love About This Recipe:
- Even avid ketchup eaters will agree, you don’t need any of that stuff to dunk your onion rings into when eating these onion rings. The bbq sauce provides plenty of flavor, with the sauce already “built-in” to the ring.
- They are lightly crisp with a great smoky/spicy flavor and they are not deep fried (yay!)
- They are delicious!

Baked BBQ Onion Rings
Ingredients

- 2 large eggs, beaten
- 4 tablespoons all purpose flour
- 3 cups panko bread crumbs
- 2 large sweet onions, sliced into 1/2-inch rings
- cooking spray
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 450℉. Place two baking sheets in the oven and let those preheat too.
- In a medium bowl, whisk together the barbecue sauce, eggs and flour. Place the bread crumbs in a separate bowl.
- Using tongs (or your fingers) dip an onion slice in the barbecue sauce mixture, shake the excess off and then dunk on all sides into the bread crumbs. Lay on a cool baking sheet. Repeat until all onion slices have been dunked.
- Remove the hot baking sheets from the oven and spray lightly with cooking spray. Move the coated onions to the hot baking sheets. Spray the coated onions lightly with cooking spray.
- Bake for about 6 minutes, or until golden, then use tongs to turn each onion ring over. Spray the other side of the onions with cooking spray and bake for an additional 5 to 7 minutes. Watch closely to make sure the crumbs are not browning too quickly or burning.
- Remove them from the oven and serve immediately.
Notes
- *Panko bread crumbs can be found in your market's Asian aisle. Regular breadcrumbs may be substituted.

How many rings are in a serving? Thank you very much
That’s tough to pinpoint. The entire recipe is 6 servings, so you can divide all of the onion rings into 6 servings and then you’ll get your number!
These were GREAT! I made them with what I had: red onions, regular wheat bread crumbs, and no egg, but they were still awesome! Will try egg next time as they’ll probably hold together a tad better, but totally works without if you want to make them vegan. Anyhow, they were the perfect late-night-I-want-junk-food-but-not-guilt snack! (I also used the Sweet Baby Ray’s BBQ 🙂
Makes me wish I had eggs so I could make them tonight
SCORE!!!!! Made these tonight along side fried cod fish and zucchini….my SUPER PICKY 16 month old son gobbled them up!!! I will add this to the very short list of things he will eat again!
I made these the other night and wrote about them. In my opinion they are better than the classic breaded deep fried onion ring. They weren’t greasy and you don’t get that string of onion that comes out when you bite into it and are left with the mushy breading part. I hate that!
We’ll be making these again for sure.
Thanks for sharing the recipe!!!!!
I just made these for my family tonight and they were AMAZING. Thanks for the recipe! 🙂
Made them tonight to go with our grilled steak sandwiches, grilled corn on the cob, and tomato/cucumber/red onion salad. They were DELICIOUS! And so easy! 🙂
These sound so tasty, and I too love that they are baked. Totally going to have to give them a try! 🙂
YUMMY..i am going to try these out tonight..:)
