Low Fat Sloppy Joes

Low Fat Sloppy Joes

The best thing about these Low Fat Sloppy Joes is that my mushroom-adverse son has always willingly gulped them down like there’s no tomorrow. He doesn’t detect the mushrooms… or the other vegetables for that matter! The key is cutting all of those veggies very small. They get lost in the sauce. It’s a family friendly recipe. Our family thinks these are delicious!

🛒Ingredients needed:

  • olive oil
  • mushrooms, onion, bell pepper, carrot and celery
  • garlic
  • ground turkey and ground beef
  • ketchup
  • red wine vinegar
  • Worcestershire sauce
  • dried oregano, salt and freshly ground black pepper
  • canned tomato sauce
  • whole wheat hamburger buns

✏️How to make Low Fat Sloppy Joes:

*The complete, printable recipe with all ingredients and instructions is at the end of this post.

  1. Heat the oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat.
  2. Add the mushrooms, onion, bell pepper, celery, carrot, garlic, ground turkey and ground beef; sauté 5 minutes or until the meat is browned, stirring to crumble. Spoon out any accumulated fat, and discard.
  3. Stir in the ketchup and remaining ingredients (except buns); bring to a boil. Cover, reduce heat, and simmer for 20 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  4. Serve on toasted hamburger buns.

➡️Recipe Tips:

  • These are good with a slice of sharp cheddar melted on top, but that adds calories!
  • You can use all beef or all turkey, and you can certainly use regular hamburger buns instead of whole wheat.
  • Finely dicing the veggies makes them blend in easily with the ground meats. (Not that you’re trying to hide anything!)
