This Sunset Sangria is the perfect summery, red wine sangria recipe.

When I think of sangria, I usually think of white wine sangria, but it’s worth noting that red wine sangria should not be ignored!  Red wine sangria isn’t just for winter. It’s wonderful when it’s chilled and paired with summery fruit.  Add this Sunset Sangria to your list to make for a summer gathering of friends.

This red wine sangria is packed with fresh peaches, nectarines and red grapes. I recommend using Pinot Noir or Syrah- either of those is light enough for a sangria.  Avoid cabernet as that will have too heavy of a flavor.  The wine is flavored with Rose’s sweetened lime juice (a brand you’ll find with the cocktail mixers in your market), sugar and lime zest.

Can fresh lime juice be used in place of sweetened lime juice?

Yes!  If you’d like to substitute fresh lime juice in this recipe, use 2 cups of fresh lime juice and 1 1/2 cups sugar.  That’s a lot of limes to squeeze, but if you have them… go for it.

Can we leave out the sugar?

I’d say leaving it out entirely in this Sunset Sangria isn’t going to have the best results. If you want to reduce the amount of sugar used, add a little bit of sugar at a time until it has a flavor that you’re happy with.

Tips on adding the fruit:

In this recipe, the peaches and nectarines are chopped and added to the pitcher.  An alternative to this is stringing the fruit on medium-sized skewers and adding them to the pitcher that way.  When you serve the sangria, serve it in a glass with a skewer of the fruit sitting inside of it instead of having the floating fruit.  Then your guests can nibble the fruit off of the skewer easily!

Sunset Sangria

Ingredients

  • 2 teaspoons lime zest
  • cups Rose's sweetened lime juice
  • 3/4 cup granulated white sugar
  • Two 750 ml. bottles chilled Pinot Noir or Syrah
  • 2 medium peaches, cut into chunks (peeled or not- doesn't matter)
  • 2 medium nectarines, cut into chunks (peeled or not- doesn't matter)
  • cups red grapes
  • ice, for serving

Instructions 

  • Mix the lime zest, lime juice, and sugar in a large pitcher. Stir until the sugar is dissolved. Add the chilled wine and fruit. Refrigerate for at least two hours before serving.
  • Serve over ice, scooping fruit into glasses with the sangria.

Notes

  • In order to control the amount of sweetness desired, add the sugar a little at a time and keep tasting until it tastes good to you. If things are a little too sweet, go ahead and add a bit of fresh lime juice to tone down the sweetness. You can also stir in a little water.
  • If you prefer to use all fresh lime juice for this recipe, you'll need to modify... use 2 cups fresh lime juice and 1 1/2 cups sugar.
  • An alternative to adding fruit to the sangria: String the fruit onto skewers instead and stick a skewer in each glass of sangria. Use tall glasses!
